Get ready to vote!

A thriving democracy engages all of its citizens and all of its citizens engage in democracy. It is essential that young people vote to ensure their voices are heard, their perspectives are counted, and our elected officials see them as constituents that must be listened to and represented.

In Pennsylvania, more than 70,000 young people turn 18 every year, and the statewide margin in the 2020 presidential election was 80,555. In Allegheny County alone, an estimated 5,000 18 year olds still need to register in order to be eligible to vote this year. To address this need, the Allegheny Coalition for Youth Engagement is working to ensure that every eligible high school aged teen in Allegheny County is prepared to register, and to vote.

The first Allegheny Youth Vote Huddle was held in March 2024, bringing together 55 students from 11 high schools across Allegheny County. Teens identified the issues that matter to them, and presented their concerns to Mayor Ed Gainey and PPS Superintendent Walters. Teen leaders held trainings on the importance of the youth vote, voter registration logistics, and how to run a registration drive. In the months since, teens who attended the Huddle have run drives in at least 7 schools. The second Youth Vote Huddle will be held on September 19, 2024 and will be even bigger and better!
